When a phone photo won’t upload
Gallery shots are shot for editing and large screens—often several megabytes. Portals still speak in kilobytes. Cropping a headshot in the gallery app rarely solves the byte count; you still need a smaller export.
This reducer is aimed at people photos: headshots, passport-style crops, and class or job application portraits. The picker stays on JPG/JPEG so it matches what most phones hand you after “Save as photo.”
What works well for portraits
Cap the longest side first
A 4000px selfie does not need that resolution on a form. Try 1280px for general profiles, or 800px when the limit is harsh. Resizing usually saves more than quality alone.
Then aim for a KB number
When the instructions say “under 50 KB” or “under 100 KB,” turn on the target (or tap a Quick preset). Extreme caps soften fine detail—that’s why Compare exists.
Practical tips before you submit
- Crop to the required aspect ratio before compressing when the form asks for it.
- Avoid screenshots of photos—use the original JPG from the camera roll.
- After changing Options, press Re-run so the new cap actually applies.
- Open the download once on your phone to confirm the face still looks usable.
