PNG’s honest limit: lossless means “same pixels, same bulk”
PNG stores exact colors. That’s why logos stay crisp and UI screenshots don’t get JPEG blockiness. It also means: if you keep the original width and height and only “re-save,” the browser usually can’t invent a smaller file. Many online tools hide that fact and hand you a larger download.
Here, if a PNG can’t beat the original without resizing (or without a KB target that switches to JPG), we keep your file and explain why—so you’re not guessing whether compression “worked.”
Levers that actually shrink a PNG
Resize longest side
The primary lever. A 3000px product shot exported as PNG rarely needs that resolution for a form. Cap at 1280px or 800px when the upload is for screens, not print.
Aim for a max file size
Use this when the instructions print a hard KB number. Photographic PNGs chasing tiny caps usually become JPG—that’s intentional. Keep PNG output when you need transparency or razor-sharp edges and can accept a larger file after a mild resize.
Quality slider
Quality mainly affects lossy outputs (including KB-target JPG saves). For pure PNG-at-same-size workflows, expect little or no gain—resize instead.

Common questions
Why won’t my PNG get smaller without resizing?
PNG is lossless. Re-encoding the same width and height almost never shrinks the file—and can make it larger. Cap the longest side to resize, or turn on a KB target so we can save as JPG when a form needs a tiny upload.
Will I lose transparency?
If you keep PNG output (no KB target forcing JPG), transparency stays. A hard KB target may save as JPG for size—JPG has no alpha, so choose that path only when the portal accepts photos without transparent edges.
Is this page PNG-only?
Yes. The picker accepts PNG files only. For camera JPGs use the JPG size reducer; for mixed batches use the image size reducer hub.
When should I convert PNG to JPG?
When a form prints a tiny KB limit and the PNG is a photo (not a logo that needs sharp edges or transparency). Turn on “Aim for a max file size”—we’ll chase that ceiling as JPG.
Can I batch several PNG screenshots?
